POSEIDON (Poseidôn), the god of the Mediterranean ocean. His denomination seems to be connected with Potos, pontos and potamos, likenise to which he is the god of the placid element. He was a battle cry of Cronos and Rhea (whence he is called Kronios and by Latin poets ) He was wherefore a br separate of Zeus, Hades, Hera, Hestia and Demeter, and it was dictated by lot that he should rule everywhere the sea. According to others, again, he was brought up by the Telchines at the pass of Rhea.
